How much gas does a boiler use?

With the rise of household bills, including gas prices, wondering how much gas your boiler uses is a question on many homeowners' minds. It can be worth checking with your local heating engineer to assess whether your boiler is old and outdated and whether installing a new boiler could lower your bills. It can be hard to calculate the exact gas usage of your boiler because it is not always obvious where the gas has been consumed. There are a few different factors which can determine how much gas your household uses.

Our heating engineers have put this blog together to help you better understand how much gas your boiler uses to help further reduce your energy bills.

So, how much gas does a boiler use per hour?

The amount of gas used by your boiler is determined by its size, efficiency, and the number of hours it uses every day. The sizes of boilers are measured in kilowatts (kW), varying from 24-27 kW to 28-34 kW and 35-42 kW. A 24-27 kW boiler is required for a home with one bathroom and ten radiators, but a 35-42 kW boiler is required for a big house with more than 20 radiators and three bathrooms or more.

What is kilowatt hour?

The most straightforward indication of the amount of gas your boiler is using is to look at your boiler's kilowatt-hours (kWh), alongside its efficiency rating. For example, an average size gas boiler in a UK household is a 35-kilowatt boiler. A 35-kilowatt boiler consumes 35 kilowatts worth of gas an hour (kilowatts-hours.) Therefore, if that particular boiler is on for five hours daily, it will use approximately 175kWh of gas daily.  The approximate kilowatt-hour gas use for a household in a year are:

- 8000 kWh for a small property with a lower consuming household.

- 12000 kWh for a medium-sized property, with more rooms and radiators.

- 17000 kWh for a much larger sized property with a heavy consuming household.

Your average monthly gas bill

If you wish to determine your average monthly gas consumption, contacting your local heating engineers can be worthwhile. This is because calculating your gas bill is not always straightforward. Our boiler services department would take into account the following factors:

- Different consumption habits, do you use gas just for heating? Or cooking too?

- Where you live, energy prices vary from area to area.

- How you pay for your energy and what tariff you are on: A fixed-rate basic tariff is generally lower but may not meet your household’s needs and requirements.

- Your monthly usage and how many people live in your home?

- How old is your boiler, an older boiler is often less efficient and will use more gas.

- The size of your boiler compared to your house, your boiler may be overworking for the size of your property.

- How many rooms and radiators your house has?

Noticed an increase in your heating bills?

If you have recently seen a spike in your gas bill, your boiler may consume more gas than it should. When this happens, we recommend confirming this with your energy provider to check that their prices have not been raised. Remember that newer contracts may contain a daily fee that must be paid regardless of how much gas you use.

You should also check your bill to see how much kWh you've consumed. Remember that you'll consume more gas in the winter than in the summer. There are many other reasons why your boiler could be consuming a lot of gas, this includes:

- The age of your boiler

- Malfunctioning thermostat

- Broken motorised valve

A new boiler installation may be beneficial in lowering your household bills, as newer boilers are much more energy efficient. Our local heating engineers at AllForProperty can assist with your worries and concernsIf you would like to get our professional help, please contact us on 0121 405 0404
